The Frugal Student

I am not a frugal person... Ha! Let's be honest; yes I am. I am a student, 3rd year and I have had much experience in being broke. Well, let's say, much experience in looking at my Scotiabank account and seeing little to no money. Like... not even enough to buy gum. No joke.

If you're a student or someone who is trying to save, I've got some handy dandy tips that you may know already, but seeing them will definitely help and make sense.

Don't live within your means. Live below them. Simple, the key is to spend less than you're bringing in. Instead of spending exactly what you have coming in - leave some room to spare. Events or situations will always come up and you don't want that to be a reason to go in debt. Plus, you'll feel safer and more secure with a little extra in your back pocket.

Rethink what you're spending on. Is it a need or a want? I used to justify buying furniture or something decorative to make my living space more comfy. But the reality of it is, is that you won't be living in that space for very long and you only really need it currently. When you're more secure financially you'll be able to spend that money they way you want to you.

Saving won't make you richer. But you will be more stress free. Although it is true that saving money in the bank or under your pillow won't make you any richer - it's there when you need it. And you never know when you'll need an extra 20 to make your ends meet. Or have a beer with your friends at the local pub or concert.

Check back or average out. Check back on how much you're bringing in and spending. This is one of the most basic rules to ensuring you don't go broke, ever. If you're up to date on what is going on, with exact numbers you can alter your plans and make sure that you're not over spending. Or that you're even secure for the future. Not everything is necessary in life, remember that. You need shelter & water. Those extra GB's on your phone bill isn't necessary. Remember, text messaging is unlimited & usually free. Or... here's a though: call someone.
